Habitat Monitoring
Wood Ant nests have been found in Simon's Wood. The ants build large thatched mounds in which to live and aggressively defend both their nest and food resources. They are found mainly in coniferous forests plus also found in mixed and broadleaved forests. Nests are usually south facing to allow sunlight to warm the nest.
Heathland
Heathland is a man made ancient landscape and is home to many wildlife species such as Smooth Snakes and Sand Lizards alongside more commonly found birds species. Often associated with the heathland environment are the Nightjar, Woodlark and Dartford Warbler.

Maintenance and Upkeep
A positive addition to the landscape has been the replacement bridge at Simon's Wood which was designed and constructed by volunteers. This was financed through a grant from Finchampstead Parish Council.

Woodland Management
Coppicing has been carried out in these woods for centuries and produced products such as beanpoles and charcoal. It also provides a great habitat for birds which forage and nest in the area.
The photo here shows coppiced Sweet Chestnut trees in Simon's Wood which are now showing healthy regrowth.
